No one can call Pat Travers a Luddite.

The rocker and guitar virtuoso, whose hits include “Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights)” and “Snortin’ Whiskey,” is teaming up with old friend Mark Farner, of Grand Funk Railroad fame, to try out new 3-D TV technology during a concert appearance Wednesday at The Moon.

“Television is all going to be 3-D in a few years anyway,” Travers said. “And I was intrigued by the cutting-edge nature of this project. So, why not?”

Mark Rodin, a 3-D television expert who’s also the director and producer of Seminole Productions at FSU, first approached Travers with the idea of filming a live concert in 3-D. The two met when Rodin was working as a radio DJ in South Florida.

“I’ve done a lot of sports in 3-D but not a lot of concerts,” Rodin said. “This kind of 3-D is more natural, it’s not gimmicky. It’s more like how we naturally look at things (in the real world). It’s like looking through a window at the actual event.”

“What Mark (Rodin) does is far more seductive (than the Hollywood movies shot in 3-D),” Travers said. “It has depth. You lean forward when you watch it. It doesn’t push you back in your seat, like a lot of movies. It’s pleasant to look at.”

Rockin’ The ‘House’

While Travers, Farner and Rodin have all their equipment set up, they will tape a talk show titled “P.T.’s Rock House” on Wednesday afternoon at The Moon in front of an invited audience. “Rock House” will feature Travers interviewing Farner, whose wildly popular band broke The Beatles’ Shea Stadium attendance record by selling out the venue in 72 hours in 1971.

“I want to find out how Mark Farner became Mark Farner,” Travers said. “Where did a guy from Flint, Mich., get such a soulful voice? I want to explore his influences and celebrate his talent. It’s a musician talking to another musician. Then I’m going to get a great performance out of him.”

“P.T.’s Rock House” will be pitched to programmers at Direct TV for the 3-D market.

“There’s not a lot of 3-D content out there right now (for television),” Rodin said. “They will be looking for programs.”

That evening’s concert, which is open to the public, also will be recorded in 3-D.

“We will have 3-D monitors set up with glasses so people can see what we’re doing,” Rodin said.

Travels With Travers

Travers started his journey in the music biz during the glory days of the analog age in Canada. He was barely in his teens when he saw Jimi Hendrix perform live in Ottawa in 1968 and that was all it took to convince him to want to become a hot-shot guitarist. Like Hendrix, Travers first moved to England to perform and land a record deal. By the late ’70s, when his career was taking off, Travers returned to North America and relocated to the Sunshine State.

“I moved to Coconut Grove when it was still very bohemian and laid back,” Travers said. “Then the Mariel Boatlift happened and the Cocaine Cowboys came along and things went crazy.

“We were playing a lot of shows around Florida — ‘Boom Boom’ was recorded in Orlando and the rest (of the live album) in Gainesville. I was in Orlando and they took me to show me around the town. I got to Winter Park and thought, ‘I like this place. I could live here.’ And I’ve been there ever since. I like Central Florida.”
